Couples counselling or therapy is not only for people with relationship problems. For example, some couples want to improve their relationship or want to work on a specific area of their relationship. Such as improving certain inter-personal skills.
Other times couples need to deal with hurt, disappointment and conflict. Certainly, also with seemingly irreconcilable differences, trauma, and infidelity in the relationship. Coming to counselling the problem has usually already been discussed repeatedly. It has been over-analysed and has just caused more trouble.
Consequently, focusing further on the problem in counselling often just creates more tension.
